• Addressing WASH challenges in the workplace

As part of our 2025 Sustainability strategy, Xylem invites suppliers to commit to implementing the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Pledge at the Workplace.

The WASH Pledge

WASH (Safe Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) is critical to leading healthy lives. Yet one third of the world’s population is without access to a safe toilet, 10% of the world’s population does not have access to safe drinking water, and 1 in every 8 people practice open defecation.

As part of our 2025 Sustainability strategy, Xylem invites suppliers to commit to implementing the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Pledge at the Workplace.

Xylem signed the pledge in 2019 and looks forward to all our suppliers joining us on this journey. One of the requirements to becoming a Xylem preferred supplier is signing the Pledge and committing to WASH.  As a water technology company, we believe committing to the WASH Pledge is the right thing to do, especially as global water challenges are intensifying, placing people and communities around the world at increasing risk.

This initiative was released by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s (WBCSD) and WASH4Work Coalition.

The WBCSD Pledge for access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) is an opportunity for companies to contribute concretely to the implementation of SDG 6, while at the same time ensuring that they provide international best practice on WASH.

"By signing the WASH Pledge, companies commit to implementing access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene at the workplace at an appropriate level of standard for all employees in all premises, under their control within three years of signature. Under the Pledge, companies also commit to taking action on WASH across their value chain, including among their suppliers, as well as in the communities that surround their workplaces and/or where their workers live."

Learn more on the official WBCSD Site

The process is quite straightforward: A representative in a position to commit their business can sign the Pledge and submit a statement (see sample below) to the WBCSD Water team and xylem.sustainability@xylem.com in cc.

Example statement

"This email confirms that (name of the company) has committed to signing the Pledge for Access to Safe Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. We recognize that by signing this Pledge,  (name of the company) commits to implementing access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene at an appropriate level of standard for all employees in all premises under our direct control, and supporting partners across our value chains and communities that surround our workplaces, within three years of signature."

The WASH Pledge is a non-binding commitment and therefore there is no formal reporting requirement. However, companies are encouraged to communicate their achievements through both internal and external channels and to spread the word to other businesses and stakeholders to act and ensure safe and adequate WASH access. We also strongly recommend that you submit a case study and share your progress with WBCSD.
