A Gulf Coast chemical plant was faced with an unreliable demineralizer system to meet a proposed expansion of boiler feedwater requirements. In addition, the plant had a wastewater goal of zero liquid discharge. High total dissolved solids (TDS) in a proposed new well-water source threatened to increase demineralizer regeneration frequency, greatly increasing acid and caustic usage.

Over approximately five years, Aurora Water observed a notable increase in water main breaks. With limited resources to renew aging infrastructure, the utility’s pipeline replacement program was struggling to keep pace.

One of the key advantages of a variable speed system as opposed to the constant speed systems of old is the ability to adjust pump speed and staging in relation to actual demand or changes in incoming city pressure.

The source of the contaminated water was located approximately 250 meters away from the municipal well, at a former industrial site. Upon learning of the elevated test results, the state issued a “do not drink” order to the 450 residents served by the municipal water supply until the water source could pass quality testing again.

The $500 million 434,000 square-foot, 6-story hospital building houses 262 beds and the adjacent medical office building is housed in a 172,000 square-foot, 6-story structure. In order to provide cooling and energy services to the campus, a 3-story, 31,800 square-foot central utility plant was included in the design.
