In 2018, as part of Xylem’s efforts to raise public awareness of water challenges and engage youth, we have partnered with Premiere League champions, the Manchester City Football Club and New York City Football Club. The goal of this initiative is to harness the power of football to engage youngsters in the value of water and water conservation.

With the vote of more than 450,000 fans, we teamed up with our partner Premier League football team Manchester City’s foundation, Citizens Giving, football fans, volunteers and the community to conduct a WASH education program with youth football clinics and installed a clean drinking water tower in Bangalore, India. 

Xylem employees have also partnered with New York City Football Club employees and fans to conduct a water education session, together with a football clinic, in a disadvantaged neighborhood in Harlem.

As a founding sponsor of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize, Xylem continues year after year to drive innovation through youth education in the water technology space. SJWP, the most prestigious international student competition for water-related research, gathers young talent from all over the world, encouraging their passion for water and sustainability issues. The competition draws more than 10,000 entries from over 30 countries, and our employees play a key role by providing mentorship to youth in local competitions.

In 2018, Planet Water Foundation, in partnership with Xylem Watermark, delivered clean water to more than 97,000 people and water-health and hygiene education programs to more than 41,000 children. They constructed 78 AquaTowers, 6 AquaPods, and 54 AquaHomes across Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, Thailand, and Puerto Rico. More than 300 Xylem employees participated in these water projects, supplying approximately 5,800 hours of hands on support and gaining first hand exposure to the impact fresh water makes to communities.

Since 2008, Xylem and Mercy Corps have responded to global disasters providing access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene for 1.95 million people in 24 countries. We have reached vulnerable communities during some of the toughest emergencies, including providing more than 5 million liters of clean water to families affected by the earthquake in Haiti, to increasing the water supply for Syrian refugees in Jordan, to helping communities effected by Hurricane Irma in Texas and Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. Just in 2018 alone, we impacted approximately 29,000 people in Nepal, Indonesia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the United States.

In 2018, EarthEcho engaged over 53,500 people in 33 countries in monitoring their local bodies of water and sharing their water quality data through the EarthEcho Water Challenge. Over 22,500 of these participants took action beyond monitoring by leading projects and initiatives to protect water resources in their communities. With support from Xylem Watermark, EarthEcho distributed 4,039 water testing kits worldwide for use by individuals and organizations. A total of 787 Xylem employees worked with EarthEcho to lead education and water monitoring activities directly reaching 4,076 community members. Additionally, 20 young leaders (ages 13-20) led water quality events in their home communities, reaching over 1,000 people as EarthEcho's inaugural cohort of Water Challenge Ambassadors—a new initiative sponsored by Xylem Watermark.

In 2018, Water For People, in partnership with Xylem Watermark, worked to improve access to safe drinking water and sanitation services in two schools and 23 communities. This work provided access to safe drinking water for 3,868 community members through the implementation of borehole systems and rehabilitated water points. Additionally, the projects improved the water quality and sanitation services in schools, impacting the lives of 1,777 students and teachers. The schools now have running water for drinking and handwashing, pour-flush latrine blocks, menstrual hygiene changing rooms and incinerators for the girls.

Since 2005, the Watermark program and Water For People have reached over 620,000 people who no longer need the support of external aid to ensure they continue to have access to safe water and sanitation services and to transform their hygiene behavior.

In 2016, China Women’s Development Foundation (CWDF) implemented six water projects in schools across China, which included the construction of improved drinking water facilities, reconstruction of lavatories, building of hand-washing facilities and delivering health education and training to over 10,000 students and teachers.

In 2018, Xylem employees constructed hand pumps and deployed them in communities in Argentina that did not have access to clean drinking water. The project beneficiated 80 families with an average of 7 persons per family, for a total of approximately 550 beneficiaries.

Since Fundación Avina’s founding in 1994, more than 3 million Latin Americans have gained access to safe water through democratic governance of water resources and public-private partnerships that have bolstered community water management models.
