Xylem's Smith-Blair 416 steel insulating coupling connects and insulates metal pipes with the same outside diameters. Installation is easy with no special pipe end preparation required. The coupling allows for limited expansion and contraction, dampens vibration to reduce pipe fatigue, and can be custom made to fit odd O.D.s or other unusual applications.

Key Product Features

  • Joins plain-end pipe of same outside diameters, insulating one from the other
  • Meets applicable AWWA C219 Standards
  • Allows for limited expansion and contraction
  • Will dampen vibration to reduce pipe fatigue
  • Easy to install, no special pipe end preparation required
  • Available in a wide variety of pipe O.D. sizes and sleeve lengths
  • Can be custom made to fit odd O.D.s or other unusual applications
  • Has good deflection capabilities, allows change in piping direction without the need of elbows, bends, etc.

The Smith-Blair 416 steel insulating coupling is used to connect and insulate metal pipes with the same outside diameters. The coupling meets applicable AWWA C219 Standards and has good deflection capabilities, allowing for change in piping direction without the need for elbows, bends, or other fittings.

The 416 coupling is constructed with a sleeve made from ASTM A53, ASTM A513, or Carbon Steel having a minimum yield of 30,000 PSI. Followers are manufactured from Ductile Iron ASTM A536 or Steel AISI C1020 Steel. High strength, low alloy steel bolts and nuts with heavy semi-finished hexagon nuts provide secure fastening, with stainless steel bolts and nuts available as an option. The gasket is Nitrile (Buna N) NSF 61 compounded to produce superior storage and performance characteristics while resisting water, acids, alkalies, most aliphatic hydrocarbon fluids, and other chemicals. The coupling features a Flexi-Coat® Fusion Bonded Epoxy Finish and operates within a temperature range of -20°F to 180°F.

The coupling is rated for working pressures up to 150 PSI and is suitable for pipe applications including steel and cast iron. Available in a wide variety of pipe O.D. sizes and sleeve lengths, the 416 coupling comes in standard sizes ranging from 2 inches through 24 inches, with larger sizes available upon request. Installation is easy with no special pipe end preparation required, and the coupling allows for limited expansion and contraction while dampening vibration to reduce pipe fatigue.

With its ability to dampen vibration and reduce pipe fatigue, the 416 coupling offers a durable, long-lasting solution for connecting and insulating metal pipes while maintaining electrical isolation between sections.

This product does not restrain pipe movement. Proper anchoring is required to prevent pipe pullout. Failure to anchor or improper anchoring can result in dangerous pipe content escape, property damage, serious injury, or death. Users must read the product installation instructions prior to installing this product.
