Xylem's Smith-Blair 472 Pipe-Lock restraint coupling is a steel fabricated coupling that joins and restrains PVC pipe with no other method of restraining pipe required. The mechanical restraint is an integral part of the follower gland utilizing multiple single tooth wedges. The coupling comes as a complete unit (sleeve, 2 restraints, 2 gaskets, appropriate number of studs) or as a sleeve only to use with your existing inventory.

Key Product Features

  • Joins and restrains from PVC pipe with no other method of restraining pipe required.
  • Mechanical restraint shall be an integral part of the follower gland utilizing multiple single tooth wedges
  • Comes as a complete unit (sleeve, 2 Cam-Locks, 2 gaskets, appropriate number of studs) or as a sleeve only to use with your existing inventory
  • Use with the Multi-Seal Gasket for more flexibility in nominal sizes 4"-12" — mixing IPS and D.I. O.D. PVC
  • Breakaway nut torque per wedge is 45 to 60 ft. lbs
  • Coupling is rated at the working pressure shown on page 30
  • Longer sleeves available

The Smith-Blair 472 fabricated steel restraint coupling is designed to join and restrain  PVC with no other method of restraining pipe required. This Pipe-Lock coupling delivers a proven restraint solution where the mechanical restraint is an integral part of the follower gland utilizing multiple single tooth wedges. The coupling is designed to provide reliable joint restraint while accommodating plain-end pipe of the same outside diameter, making installation straightforward without special pipe end preparation.

The 472 coupling is constructed with a sleeve made from ASTM A283 Gr. C or Carbon Steel having a minimum yield of 30,000 PSI, finished with Flexi-Coat Fusion-Bonded Epoxy for corrosion protection. The joint restraint components include a gland made of 65-45-12 Ductile Iron per ASTM A536, single tooth wedges of heat-treated Ductile Iron for Ductile Iron pipe applications, and actuating bolts made from 60-40-18 Ductile Iron per ASTM A536. Breakaway nuts are constructed of Carbon Steel or Cast Iron. The gland features Flexi-Coat Fusion-Bonded Epoxy finish per AWWA C213, while wedges and actuating bolts are E-coated with Epoxy. The complete kit includes SBR Standard Mechanical Joint gaskets per ANSI/AWWA C111/A21.11 SBR, Multi-Seal Gasket, or MJ transition gasket for Steel/IPS ODs, with high strength, low alloy studs and nuts per AWWA C111.

The 472 coupling is designed for PVC pipe applications. Working pressure ratings vary by nominal size: 3" through 16" sizes are rated at 350 PSI, 18" through 24" sizes are rated at 250 PSI, 30" and 36" sizes are rated at 225 PSI, 42" size is rated at 160 PSI, and 48" size is rated at 140 PSI.

The coupling is available in sizes ranging from 3 inches through 36 inches, accommodating both DI sized pipe (4" thru 36") and IPS sized pipe (3" thru 12"). An optional multi-seal gasket is available in 4"-12" sizes for more flexibility in mixing IPS and D.I. O.D. PVC, while 30" and 36" sizes are supplied with Smith-Blair MJ gasket.

The 472 Pipe-Lock coupling comes as a complete unit including the sleeve, 2 joint restraints, 2 gaskets, and the appropriate number of studs, or as a sleeve only option to use with existing inventory. The breakaway nut torque per wedge is specified at 45 to 60 ft. lbs for proper installation. Assembled joints into each follower gland allow for controlled deflection: three degree deflection on 3" sizes, five degrees on 4"-12" sizes, two degrees on 14"-24" sizes, 1.5 degrees on 18"-24" sizes, and one degree on 30"-48" sizes. Longer sleeves are available for special applications where additional length is required. Optional 304 Stainless Steel fluoropolymer-coated nuts are available for enhanced corrosion resistance in demanding environments.
