FLEXI-COAT® Fusion Bonded Epoxy Coating

Smith-Blair FLEXI-COAT Fusion Bonded Epoxy Coating is designed for superior corrosion protection of steel and cast products used in the water, wastewater, and natural gas distribution industries.

Smith-Blair Epoxy Coating Line

Xylem's Smith-Blair FLEXI-COAT Fusion Bonded Epoxy Coating is a one-part, heat cured, thermosetting epoxy coating designed for superior corrosion protection of steel and cast products used in the water, wastewater and natural gas distribution industries. The epoxy is applied to preheated metal products as a dry powder, and when heat is introduced, the powder melts and cures to form a uniform coating. The bonding process provides excellent adhesion and coating coverage, regardless of the part's shape.

Problem Solved:

Protects steel and cast products from corrosion in water, wastewater, and natural gas distribution applications

Key Benefits:

  • Meets all applicable standards as described in AWWA C213 and C550
  • Certified to NSF/ANSI 61
  • Superior flexibility to resist cracking
  • Improved UV resistance
  • Highly rated cathodic disbondment resistance
  • High abrasion resistance
  • Standard thickness of 12 mils
  • Patch kits are available, if field repair is ever required

Since 1997, FLEXI-COAT Fusion Bonded Epoxy Coating has been the standard for all of Xylem’s Smith-Blair's pipe fitting products that require such a coating. It is a one-part, heat cured, thermosetting epoxy coating designed to provide superior corrosion protection for steel and cast products used across the water, wastewater, and natural gas distribution industries.

The epoxy is applied to preheated metal products as a dry powder. When heat is introduced, the powder melts and cures to form a uniform coating, and the bonding process provides excellent adhesion and coating coverage regardless of the part's shape. FLEXI-COAT meets all applicable standards described in AWWA C213 and C550 and is certified to NSF/ANSI 61, giving it superior flexibility to resist cracking, improved UV resistance, highly rated cathodic disbondment resistance, and high abrasion resistance. The coating is applied at a standard thickness of 12 mils, and patch kits are available should field repair ever be required.

As part of Smith-Blair's quality control process, daily tests are conducted to check FLEXI-COAT's performance in four key areas. Adhesion testing constantly checks the coating's bonding capability to metal, while MEK rub testing rates the coating's resistance to abrasion. Impact testing measures the level of impact the coating can endure, and mil thickness testing assures that the required coating thickness is being met on every part.
