There is one thing that Xylem shares with the greatest engineering innovators, and that is continuous investment into new product development. This can been seen at the spectacular development of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai – the world’s tallest manmade structure.

Xylem Lowara is at the heart of the latest technology in water transportation systems, and has become a state-of-the-art supplier of pumping equipment in many prestigious projects in the Middle East. By working closely with consultants and contractors we are reducing energy consumption to its minimum possible levels, and the recent energy saving project in Dubai has literally reached new heights.

A towering achievement in energy efficiency…

Burj Khalifa was formerly Burj Dubai, the word “Burj” means tower in Arabic. The triple lobed footprint of the 828 metre building is based on the shape of the Hymenocalli desert flower native to the United Arab Emirates. The tower is the centre piece of Downtown Burj Dubai, a large scale mixed-use development. The exterior cladding is made of reflective glazing with aluminium and textured stainless steel spandrel panels.

Extraordinary engineering has enabled the enormous building to be run in a highly efficient way. One example is the set of vertical tubular fins of stainless steel which withstand Dubai’s extreme summer temperatures. Burj Khalifa stands not only for unparalleled luxury, but is also an architectural accomplishment and a testimony for human achievement. The structure takes its place in history as one of the world’s great landmarks.

…the peak of reliability in water pump technology

Construction began on 21 September 2004, with the exterior of the structure completed on 1 October 2009. The building is part of the 2 km2 (490-acre) flagship development called Downtown Burj Khalifa at the “First Interchange” along Sheikh Zayed Road, near Dubai’s main business district.

Xylem Lowara pumps were chosen to meet the extreme demand for reliability in the world’s highest building. Xylem Lowara has supplied six water transfer sets (11kW-200kW) and 7 water booster sets (4kW-37kW) utilising vertical and horizontal multistage pumps through Ahmed Ramadhan Juma (ARJ). The water booster sets, which are used to boost water pressure, are fitted with Hydrovar® variable speed drives.

Hydrovar® technology sets the standard in efficiency

Variable speed drives using Hydrovar® can reduce energy consumption by 30% while increasing customers’ comfort by providing them with a constant residual pressure at any water outlet regardless of the time of the day and/or the number of users.

Hydrovar® varies pump speed to ensure that the water flow rate/pressure meets the demand while the motors run efficiently and the energy is not wasted. Each set comprises two duty plus one stand-by pump. The pumps are located at the basement level and at two other technical floors that exist at one third of the total height of the tower and serve all the domestic water outlets in this tower.

Quality in pump construction

To meet the highest demands for quality, the sets were factory assembled at the Xylem Lowara facilities located in Vicenza, Italy and were delivered and commissioned on site in Burj Dubai in August 2009. The Burj Khalifa officially opened on 4 January 2010, and the water system is already supplying on average 946,000 litres of water per day, plus water that is gathered from condensation from the cooling system. Yet another massive innovation for this extraordinary building.
