Xylem Water Solutions provides holistic solution for UK brewery market
17 December 2018
In a UK market that has recently been claimed as ‘overcrowded’, breweries looking to gain competitive advantage should consider the latest water innovations from global water technology company, Xylem.
Xylem Water Solutions offers a range of technologies relevant to the brewery market from water supply to wastewater treatment. It is now launching a campaign to help breweries manage wastewater more efficiently while also improving the quality of water, and therefore beer.
Jan-Karl Nielebock, Application Manager at Xylem explains: “Whether we are talking about a small brewery, or a large industrial group with state-of-the-art technology, the production process is basically the same. Therefore, irrespective of their size, breweries need reliable equipment for each stage: water treatment, cooling water applications, water purification and wastewater. Although requirements differ greatly, Xylem offers complete solutions for all breweries, all from one source.”
Products for pre-treatment include the Lowara Series Z multistage pumps for breweries that have their own reserve of drinking water and are connected to springs or deep wells, extracting from depths as low as 700 metres. The Wedeco certified UV water purification systems treat water efficiently and effectively, and Lowara centrifugal pumps circulate water through to the brew house in the hot area of the brewery. Jabsco units also have the capability of hygienically and efficiently handling liquids with different viscosity levels, while Lobe displacement pumps are used in the flavouring process, and provide correct dosing.
Breweries, or any other plants where impurities are present, or where changes of recipes take place, have to carry out sterilisation and cleaning activities (SIP/CIP). Jabsco process pumps ensure these chemical detergents are pumped safely through pipes and equipment. However, wastewater is heavily contaminated, sometimes with highly corrosive substances, and must be treated before being discharged into the public sewer network. Wastewater is pumped using stainless steel Flygt pumps. Taking advantage of ozone oxidation or UV rays, micro-pollutants and biocides are safely eliminated.
Ralf Kemmesies, Application and Process Engineering Manager at Xylem comments: “Large breweries have their own downstream connected purification systems. The purification stages are the same as for municipal purification systems, but with direct discharge. Small and medium breweries are also responsible for the complete treatment of wastewater. Our Flygt pumps efficiently and safely transport wastewaters of all kinds. Flygt submersible mixers, with adjustable speeds based on environmental conditions, bring even results inside the purification basin, with low energy consumption.”
With its new “You take care of the beer, we take care of the water” campaign, Xylem is keen to support brewers across the UK and Ireland. Paul Winnett, General Manager Industry concludes “we have a broad range of process water expertise here at Xylem. Our customers benefit from working with us as a single supplier for all products and services relating to the management of water inside the industry.”
