Mimizan deploys the Xylem Vue platform to optimize its wastewater network management

Water Utilities Digital Solutions Digital Transformation Smart Water Municipal Wastewater

As wastewater utilities face progressively stricter regulatory requirements, while also needing to optimize investments in a constrained financial environment, the Communauté de Communes de Mimizan, in the South of France, is taking a major step forward in the digital transformation of its wastewater service.

As part of this, the utility is implementing the Xylem Vue platform to consolidate over 20 000 data points per day, currently spread across the utility’s various operational systems, enabling real-time identification of the areas most affected by groundwater infiltration and helping prioritize maintenance and rehabilitation investments where they will have the greatest impact.

A territory facing significant groundwater infiltration challenges

The Communauté de Communes de Mimizan operates a wastewater collection network spanning 200 kilometers, including 45 pumping stations, serving more than 12,000 residents (and up to 26 000 during summer period) across six municipalities. Like many areas in the Landes region, its network is heavily affected by groundwater infiltration due to the proximity of the water table.

In 2024, infiltration volumes reached 715,000 m³, representing nearly 42% of the of the inflow to the wastewater treatment plant. These excess flows increase operating costs, reduce treatment plant performance, and make regulatory compliance more challenging.

“Until now, we mainly relied on periodic measurement campaigns carried out as part of our wastewater master plan. Our objective is now to gain a continuous understanding of how our network operates, enabling us to accurately identify priority areas and focus our investments where they will deliver the greatest benefit.”
Denis Mayacon, Director, Water Utility for the Communauté de Communes de Mimizan

Turning data into decisions

To support this objective, the Xylem Vue platform will consolidate data from the utility’s existing operational systems while integrating information from newly installed field equipment, including flow meters, radar level sensors and rain gauges. More than 20,000 data points will be analyzed every day, providing a comprehensive view of network performance, identifying different types of groundwater infiltration, and enabling operational teams to understand where, when and why interventions are needed.

“Utilities already have access to vast amounts of data, but too often that information remains fragmented across multiple applications. With Xylem Vue, we help transform this data into actionable insights that help utilities understand how their networks truly perform, prioritize interventions, and support investment decisions. This project demonstrates how digital platforms are becoming an essential tool for meeting the growing requirements of continuous network assessment,” says Victor Philippon, Business Developer Xylem Vue for France and Belgium.

Deployment will begin this autumn in the municipality of Mézos, which will serve as the pilot area for the next five years. Subject to successful results, the platform will gradually be extended across all municipalities within the Communauté de Communes.
