Various cooling towers are operated in the water treatment plant at the forge. Disinfection is carried out using expensive biocides, which are also environmentally problematic for rivers when discharged directly. The company was therefore looking for new, efficient and cost-effective disinfection technology to solve these issues.

The operators wanted to use non-hazardous table salt with electrolysis for disinfection. They were also looking for a filter technology that generates low wastewater costs and can be installed in a space-saving manner.

The German municipal waterworks SWU Energy provides 162,000 people per day with potable water. This encompasses a distribution system of approximately 760 kilometres in Ulm, Neu-Ulm and the neighboring districts. More than 11 million cubic metres of water per year come from the valleys of Donau and Iller. The sedimentary nature of the region ensures the high quality of the water which is distributed by twelve pumping stations and ten high-level reservoirs.

The city of Scottsdale, Arizona, a community of more than 200,000 residents was historically totally dependent on groundwater resources. By the mid 1980's, the city began putting together a multi-faceted water resource program to provide the community with a long-term sustainable water supply.

Fraser Coast Regional Council (FCRC), through Wide Bay Water (WBW), a commercialized business unit of the Council, maintains numerous water supply schemes throughout the region, including remote reservoirs. Reservoirs offer security of potable water supply to the community despite seasonal demands. Additional chlorination may be required to ensure the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines are met.

The 34 MGD Otay Water Treatment Plant in San Diego, California serves a population of approx. 200,000. The plant receives raw water from two sources - imported water from the Colorado River and runoff from three local reservoirs.
