Xylem's Smith-Blair 473 Pipe-Lock is a fabricated steel restraint coupling that joins and restrains a straight transition plain end PVC to plain end ductile iron or plain end PVC to plain end steel. The mechanical restraint is an integral part of the follower gland utilizing multiple single tooth wedges. The coupling comes as a complete unit (sleeve, two joint restraints, two gaskets, and appropriate number of studs) or as a sleeve only to use with your existing inventory.

Key Product Features

  • Joins and restrains a straight transition plain end PVC to plain end ductile iron or plain end PVC to plain end steel.
  • Mechanical restraint shall be an integral part of the follower gland utilizing multiple single tooth wedges
  • Comes as a complete unit (sleeve, 2 joint restraints, 2 gaskets, and appropriate number of studs) or as a sleeve only to use with your existing inventory
  • Use with the Multi-Seal Gasket for more flexibility — mixing IPS and D.I. O.D. PVC
  • Breakaway nut torque per wedge is 45 to 60 ft. lbs
  • Coupling is rated at the working pressure shown on the next page
  • Longer sleeves available

The Smith-Blair 473 Pipe-Lock is a fabricated steel restraint coupling designed for joining and restraining straight transition plain end PVC to plain end ductile iron or plain end PVC to plain end steel. This coupling provides a reliable connection for mixed pipe material applications while offering mechanical restraint as an integral part of the follower gland utilizing multiple single tooth wedges.

The 473 comes as a complete unit including sleeve, 2 joint restraints, 2 gaskets and the appropriate number of studs, or as a sleeve only to use with existing inventory. Assembled joints into each follower gland through 12" allow for three degree deflection on 3", five degrees on 4"-12", two degrees 14"-24", 1.5 degrees 18"-24", and one degree 30"-48".

The 473 Pipe-Lock coupling is constructed with a sleeve made from ASTM A283 Gr. C or Carbon Steel having a minimum yield of 30,000 PSI, finished with Flexi-Coat Fusion-Bonded Epoxy. The joint restraint components feature a gland made of 65-45-12 Ductile Iron per ASTM A536, single tooth wedges of ductile iron heat treated for Ductile Iron pipe applications, and actuating bolts of 60-40-18 Ductile Iron per ASTM A536. Breakaway nuts are Carbon Steel or Cast Iron. The gland is finished with Flexi-Coat Fusion-Bonded Epoxy per AWWA C213, while wedges and actuating bolts are E-coated Epoxy. The kit includes SBR Standard Mechanical Joint gaskets per ANSI/AWWA C111/A21.11 SBR or Multi-Seal Gasket, and high strength, low alloy studs and nuts per AWWA C111, with optional 304 Stainless Steel fluoropolymer-coated nuts available.

The 473 Pipe-Lock coupling is rated at varying working pressures depending on pipe size and type. For PVC pipe, the coupling is rated at the pressure rating of the PVC pipe on which it is installed. For Ductile Iron applications, working pressures are 350 PSI for 3"-16", 250 PSI for 18"-24", and 250 PSI for 30"-48". For Steel applications, working pressures are 250 PSI for 3"-12". The pressure rating for a Pipe-Lock will be the smaller of the two pipes when coupling or restraining together pipes with different pressure ratings.

The coupling accommodates PVC sizes 3-36 inches; Ductile Iron sizes 3-48 inches; and Steel sizes 3-12 inches. The Multi-Seal Gasket option provides additional flexibility for mixing IPS and D.I. O.D. PVC applications.

The Smith-Blair 473 restraint coupling features a breakaway nut torque per wedge of 45 to 60 ft. lbs, ensuring secure and consistent installation. The mechanical restraint system utilizes multiple single tooth wedges as an integral part of the follower gland, providing reliable joint restraint without requiring separate restraining devices. Longer sleeves are available for special applications requiring extended coverage.

The coupling can be ordered as a complete assembly or as a sleeve-only option for use with existing inventory, providing flexibility in procurement and installation. The use of the Multi-Seal Gasket allows for greater versatility in field applications where mixing IPS and D.I. O.D. PVC pipe connections is required, making the 473 an adaptable solution for diverse pipe system needs.
