Flygt top-entry agitators save energy and support methane gas recovery.
Xylem has launched a series of new Flygt topentry agitators that off er benefits in terms of energy efficiency, safety and compliance with increasingly strict environmental regulations.
“Xylem’s new Flygt top-entry agitators were developed for several reasons,” says product manager Per Selenius. “Skyrocketing energy costs have increased the demand for energy-efficient components, and tighter environmental regulations favor wastewater treatment solutions that help communities cope with unwanted byproducts. The topentry agitator offers distinct advantages in each of these areas.”
The top-entry agitator, which is available in three models, is Xylem’s first dry-installed agitator, with a submersible shaft and impellers. It is installed from the top of the tank, from which all serviceable parts are accessible. Consequently, there is no need for contact with effluent and sludge to install or service the agitator, an obvious health and safety benefit. Direct accessibility also means lower installation and maintenance costs.
The Flygt 4850 is a multipurpose agitator for denitrification that features Flygt’s signature banana blade impellers. “Large propellers do not have to rotate quickly to do the job,” explains Selenius. “They can move very slowly and thereby consume negligible energy for exceptionally low operational costs.”
Flygt 4860 and 4870 are digester agitators suitable for anaerobic processes, including biogas recovery. “Methane released into the air is more than 20 times as harmful as carbon dioxide,” notes Selenius. “In light of its harm to the environment and increasingly stringent environmental regulations, wastewater plants must control methane emissions.”
Both models feature a robust leveling flange and a rotating shaft stabilizer that significantly improve agitator efficiency by keeping the agitator level and stable.
“Xylem now offers the broadest range of wastewater mixers and agitators on the market,” says Selenius. “Broader and better agitation options can help plants improve management of byproducts such as methane and sludge, which used to be regarded as undesirable. Now they are viewed as resources for power generation and for products such as fertilizer. It’s a holistic approach to wastewater treatment that benefits everyone.”
