The Role:

To develop the Xylem water business in the Northern UK Water Utilities, by developing/managing Senior relationships and working with existing sales teams / Business Development teams to drive growth in Xylem’s portfolio of solutions.


Essential Duties/Principal Responsibilities: 

  • The position is for a Business Development Manager – Client Relationships - North
  • The position will be responsible for the development of business through Client relationships in the northern UK Water Utilities (including Water Only Companies as well as Water and Sewerage Companies)
  • To develop Xylem's collaborative relationships with UK Water Utility customers, consultants, and contractors.
  • To build awareness of Xylem’s capability and successful technology application, among relevant Clients and UK water industry thought leaders/influencers, including trade bodies, research organisations, and industry regulators.
  • To proactively develop and maintain key contacts within the Water Company Clients within the relevant areas including innovation, energy, commercial, R&D, and procurement leaders.
  • To identify how Xylem’s portfolio (including smart digital solutions, products & services) can add value through innovation or by deploying leading-edge technology in new locations.
  • To support the development of business development strategy for water and wastewater markets and support the development of business across all markets where Xylem products and services can be supplied.
  • To work in close cooperation with Water Utility Regional Sales Managers / other BDMs / other field sales engineers and specialists, as well as communications /marketing colleagues, in line with Xylem Water Solutions Strategy.  
  • To work effectively with other BDMs in identifying & exploiting new frameworks where they apply for any relevant Xylem technology, including the products within the Digital solution portfolio.
  • To research and maintain market intelligence, including information on competitors and price levels to assist in day-to-day decisions and the formulation of strategy and budget planning regarding the allocated markets and products. 
  • To monitor competitor performance and provide insights about where Xylem has a competitive advantage.
  • Ability to organise, facilitate and deliver Product/Service Presentations, Lunch & Learns, etc. direct to all Customer variants.   Ability to organise customer events such as innovation days, site visits, factory visits, and other associated customer-facing events as part of the annual marketing plan or the strategic customer business plan for the region.
  • Any other duties, within your capabilities, as required by Management e.g. Dispute resolution, troubleshooting customer issues, managing customer complaints, and reacting to customer emergency requests.

Key Relationships: 

  • External: Collaborate with other sales departments in UK and Ireland (Municipal, Infrastructure, Building Services & Industry). Build relationships with industry consultants.
  • Internal: Collaborate with Area Sales Managers and BDMs for each Water Company to build a decision intelligence strategy/account plans for growth within their Water Companies

Qualifications: Education, Experience, Skills, Abilities, License/Certification: 

  • At least 3 years working in the UK/I Water Utility market.
  • Engineering or Business qualification that will complement that level of expertise.
  • Must have a good understanding of Windows based computer programs, in particular Excel.
  • Experience of using a proprietary CRM system (preferable).
  • Existing contacts & relationships within Northern UK Water Companies (WOCs and WaSCs) would be highly desirable.
  • Full driving license (preferably clean).
