Solving water sustainably

Like the ripples caused by a drop of water, sustainable changes in water technology and processes can lead to big results. In Xylem’s new sustainability report for 2014, the company highlights some of the important work it is doing to solve water challenges around the world.

Xylem’s sustainability work for customers focuses on three key areas: water productivity, water quality and resilience. The company is also making significant progress on its goals to reduce its own water use, greenhouse gas emissions and waste to landfill.

“Water is vitally connected to the world’s critical resources, including energy, labor, capital and food,” writes Xylem CEO Patrick Decker in the report. “With increasing urgency, Xylem stakeholders, including customers, communities and governments, are looking for ways to save water, reduce pollution, protect themselves from water-related risks, and find smarter ways to use water to grow food, generate power, produce goods and improve the quality of life.”

Increased efficiency and resilience

Water productivity: Xylem’s technology enables more efficient movement, treatment and use of clean water. The new Bell & Gossett ecocirc® circulator pump, which helps to heat and cool buildings, can help reduce energy consumption by up to 80 percent versus standard pumps.

Water quality: Xylem provides customers with cost-efficient and sustainable ways to manage and renew wastewater. In the US, Xylem’s Wedeco LBX Series ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system is an essential part of the Santa Clara Valley Water District’s goal to double recycled water use by 2025.

Resilience: Xylem helps customers to prepare for and recover from water-related risks. Following devastating floods in the Balkans in May 2014, Serbian and Bosnian authorities employed Flygt and Lowara brand drainage pumps to remove water from the hardest-hit areas.

Xylem’s five-year sustainability goals

Xylem has implemented a strategic framework to ensure that its sustainability actions support its business strategy. In the report, the company details ambitious five-year sustainability goals, which include reducing water use by 25 percent, greenhouse gas emission intensity by 20 percent, and waste to landfill by 20 percent.

In 2014, Xylem reduced waste to landfills by 44 percent, decreased water usage by 5 percent, and provided more than 25,000 hours of training to employees. The company also brought clean and safe water to thousands more people through Xylem Watermark, the company’s corporate citizenship and social investment program.

“Sustainability is the only way forward for us,” says Decker. “It applies to what we do and how we do it. We believe that being a global leader in the water industry and a champion for sustainability are inextricably linked.”
