  • Performance under pressure: treating zinc from a retention pond

The site of a former zinc smelter in the eastern United States, whose soil and groundwater were contaminated after decades of zinc production, posed a significant treatment challenge: the water in the newly created retention ponds had a dissolved zinc level of about 10 ppm, well above discharge limits of <0.47 ppm.
  • Removing zinc from wastewater to meet compliance for automotive part manufacturing

A Midwest manufacturer of automotive parts was experiencing elevated levels of zinc in the effluent from their existing conventional wastewater treatment system. This wastewater was generated through a multi-stage cleaning and zinc phosphate process which produced elevated levels of both particulate and dissolved zinc in the wastewaters.
  • Cheesemaker captures money-saving biogas with cover system

Since 1956, Rothenbühler Cheesemakers has been producing delicious cheese using all natural ingredients and 100% Grade-A milk. Formerly known as Middlefield Cheese, the family-owned company is one of the largest Swiss cheese manufacturers in the United States.
  • Cheesemaker saves money and the environment with ADI-BVF® reactor

Since 1956, Rothenbühler Cheesemakers has been producing delicious cheese using all natural ingredients and 100% Grade-A milk. Formerly known as Middlefield Cheese, the family-owned company is one of the largest Swiss cheese manufacturers in the United States. Its plant in Middlefield, Ohio, USA, produces five Swiss cheese varieties, as well as high-quality whey ingredient products.
  • Confectionery manufacturer eliminates sludge dewatering

The client makes several types of confectionery products at its facility. Its wastewater was being treated in a dissolved air flotation (DAF) system, followed by a dual-tank sequencing batch reactor (SBR) activated sludge system.
  • Confectionery manufacturer expands its operations with ADI-BVF® reactor

The confectionery manufacturer, located in Virginia, was faced with having to establish on-site wastewater pretreatment at its facility. A planned expansion and an overloaded publicly owned treatment works (POTW) led local authorities to require wastewater pretreatment in order to meet discharge limits of 250 mg/l for both biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total suspended solids (TSS).
  • Confectionery upgrades wastewater treatment system

An ADI Systems client was equipped with an anaerobic wastewater treatment system that consisted of an equalization tank, three hybrid anaerobic reactors, a degas tower, and a clarifier. This system was not meeting the client’s needs, as it was only removing approximately 60% of the BOD. Sludge settleability and odor issues in the open clarifier also presented a problem.
  • Cover at Pinnacle Foods harnesses energy from anaerobic digestion

When Pinnacle Foods’ acquired the Wish-Bone® and Western® salad dressing brands, its production plant in St. Elmo, Illinois, USA, would need to expand for additional flow. As part of the wastewater treatment plant expansion, Pinnacle Foods introduced anaerobic digestion technology.
  • Cover keeps plant treatment system operating successfully for 25 years

The plant is located in an urban setting, surrounded by residences and businesses. Odor from the treatment system is a prime concern for the milk processor. When the milk processor acquired the plant, the biogas collection cover on the wastewater treatment system’s anaerobic digester was nearing the end of its intended service life.
  • Xylem and the City of Tulare celebrate a quarter century of keeping California clean

The City of Tulare, USA, located in California’s world renowned San Joaquin Valley, has some of the strictest environmental regulations in the nation to protect the Golden State’s water quality. Noncompliance can be costly—up to $10,000 a day. Tulare is committed to complying with wastewater discharge requirements set forth by the California State Department of Water Resources Board.
  • Xylem helps AB Mauri rise above its wastewater challenge

AB Mauri, a division of Associated British Foods (ABF), is one of the world’s largest producers and distributors of bakery ingredients such as yeast, spices, and bread and cake mixes. AB Mauri’s holistic approach to baking includes a wide range of chemistry and technology applications in addition to its high-quality end products.
  • Xylem helps Furmano’s create energy from food waste

Furmano Foods Inc. is the Susquehanna River Valley’s premier grower and producer of beans, tomatoes, and vegetables. Since 1921, the family-owned company has been combining agricultural and manufacturing technology with environmentally friendly farming techniques to produce wholesome canned and pouched foods.
  • Xylem solves Strauss Dairy’s wastewater dilemma

Strauss Dairy, part of the Health & Wellness segment of Strauss Group Ltd., is Israel’s largest private dairy. The family-run business processes cheese, yogurt, and flavored milk drinks. The BVF reactor provides Strauss Dairy with a highly effective, yet low-maintenance pretreatment system that is resilient to a variety of operating conditions and loads. Effluent COD is less than 750 mg/l, and SS is less than 300 mg/l at design loading.
  • German sugar factory controls cooling circuit disinfection

Südzucker produces 5.4 million tons of sugar a year. Situated in Obrigheim, located in the Palatinate region, the Offstein Sugar Factory is one of the largest and oldest of nine sugar factories in Germany. Yearly, 1.4 to 1.8 million tons of sugar beets are processed. During the harvesting campaign (September to December), this is about 16,000 tons of beets daily - around the clock. Syrup and sugar are produced from the beets.
  • Kellogg Company upgrades its Pikeville wastewater facility

ADI Systems first started providing wastewater treatment solutions to the Kellogg Company Pikeville Plant (formerly Mountaintop Baking) in Kimper, Kentucky, USA, in the late 1990s. In 1999–2000, ADI Systems was awarded a design/build contract to upgrade the wastewater treatment system due to production expansion at the plant. The upgrade included an ADI® hybrid anaerobic reactor followed by an ADI® sequencing batch reactor (SBR).
  • Kraft Foods achieves excellent nutrient removals

Due to an expansion in potato chip production, the snack food plant required additional wastewater treatment capacity. It needed to be able to meet strict discharge limits for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total suspended solids (TSS), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) regulations.
  • Leading Texas dairy expands production capacity

Lone Star Dairy is a leading producer of value-added dairy ingredients derived from locally-sourced milk. While Lone Star Dairy was already enjoying the benefits of low-rate anaerobic digestion, production capacity was driving flows and loads beyond the capacity of their existing system. Upgrades were needed to remain compliant to protect the downstream publicly owned treatment works (POTW).
