Xylem India Hackathon 2023

Water is critical for a sustainable future, but its supply is changing across the world due to climate change, growing consumption, waste, and other factors.

Young brains are aware of the concerns associated with water and have the capacity to make a difference by engaging in various projects addressing these issues.

What is Xylem India Hackathon Challenge 2023?

Hackathon is a creative and social event where students come together, share ideas, and build software and hardware hacks during a specific amount of time, responding to a given problem statement introduced by Xylem. By participating in a Hackathon, it gives students the possibility to inspire the water industry with their ideas and propose a solution to water related issues.

The aim of the Xylem India Hackathon Challenge 2023 “powered by Xylem Ignite” is to learn from young minds about their understanding of specific water-related challenge and innovative, cost-effective solutions that they believe can be a potential solution to the problem.

Who should participate?

Any undergraduate or post graduate student enrolled into a university, between the age group of 18 – 25 years is eligible and can participate in the challenge as individual or in team (maximum up to 3 team members)

Why participate?

The participants will get:

  • Knowledge and awareness of water issues
  • An opportunity to join in the efforts to solve the world’s greatest challenges
  • A chance to win prizes (prizes will be offered to the five best presentations among all the participants)
  • All participants will get a participation certificate
  • Selected candidates will be given a 3-month internship opportunity with Xylem India

How to participate?

Any interested participant can register to Xylem India Hackathon Challenge 2023 by entering the details asked in registration form.

The participant must choose from one of the problem statements and will have to deliver a detailed power point presentation on the proposed solution to a given problem statement.

Point 1

Innovative techniques to tackle plastic waste in water bodies

Plastic garbage takes decades or even hundreds of years to disintegrate, putting our water sources and water quality at danger. Microplastics have been found in water all throughout the world, including our rivers, lakes, and seas. Microplastics detected in these streams make their way into our drinking water and the fish we eat. Develop innovative approaches to tackle plastic pollution in water bodies and implement preventive measures that can be integrated into existing waste management systems, policies, and public consciousness.

Point 2

Develop a cost-effective, energy-efficient water distribution solution for residential buildings

In any residential building, distributing water equitably and effectively is a challenge. To address this, a novel water transfer system that minimizes energy use while maintaining a regular and reliable water supply to all levels of the residential complex is required. This solution must address various technical complexities and operational considerations to achieve a sustainable, cost-effective, and eco-friendly water distribution process.

Key Considerations: Energy efficient, Equitable water supply, Sustainable practices, Operational viability, Scalable and cost-effective, Reliability and Maintenance

Point 3

Sustainable landscaping design for urban areas

Landscaping provides an opportunity to preserve and protect the environment.  Sustainable landscaping is the design, construction, and maintenance of ecologically friendly gardens and outdoor areas that encourage biodiversity, reduce waste, and build healthy ecosystems that benefit both people and the earth.

Point 4

Innovative and cost-effective water monitoring technology for efficient water management

Water quality must be monitored to ensure that it is safe for humans to drink as well as for wildlife and marine life. It is critical to assess water quality in streams, rivers, lakes, etc. to understand environmental implications and avoid harming aquatic life.

Collection and analysis of water quality parameters help to gain insights and make informed decisions about water management.

Water quality parameters like pH, BOD, COD, TDS, TSS.

Point 5

Greywater Treatment and Recycling Systems

Greywater is water from your bathroom sinks, showers, tubs, washing machines, etc. In India, there are no pipelines to separate grey water from black water in the home. Propose a suitable, practical technique for isolating grey water at its source and its treatment so that it may be recycled for non-portable uses such as irrigation or toilet flushing.

Point 6

Water-Energy Nexus

Explore solutions that address the interconnectedness between water and energy systems, aiming to reduce the energy consumption of water treatment processes or harnessing renewable energy sources for water-related operations.
