Northumbrian Water provides water supply and sewerage services to a population of 2.7m in the north east and 1.8m in the south east of England, delivering 1,100 MLD of drinking water. Potable water treatment works vary from small groundwater sources to large surface water treatment facilities. Their Mosswood Water Treatment Works in County Durham treats 135 MLD of water by clarification, filtration and chlorination.

Stillorgan Reservoir disinfection upgrade
Whilst residual chlorination is relied upon to provide protection of drinking water in distribution systems, it is increasingly being supplemented by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation as a primary disinfectant for drinking water treatment. As a chemical-free process it avoids many of the issues associated with hazardous oxidising disinfectants and does not generate disinfection by-products. It is also effective against microbiological pollutants such as protozoa, that are resistant to chlorine.

Updating London’s drinking water network
A UK water supply company serves a population of approximately 675,000 consisting of homes and businesses in Surrey, Sussex and Kent and is a key part of London’s drinking water network. The largest works in Kent, which takes raw water from a reservoir that is recharged in winter by abstraction from the River Eden. The original works capacity was 35Ml/d and it is currently undergoing a phased uprate.

UV disinfection ensures compliance and improves water quality
Irish Water was created by the Irish Government in 2013 and supplies drinking water to the whole of the Republic of Ireland. The company is investing over €65 million as part of their National Disinfection Programme involving the upgrade and standardisation of disinfection systems currently installed in over 800 sites including water treatment plants, pumping stations and reservoirs.
