Your role within Xylem as a Customs Operation Team Leader

Within this role, you are responsible for the management, engagement and overseeing the Customs Operations team, the related processes, resources and activities, and identifying and implementing continuous improvements and change initiatives. In essence, you will become our go to person for export & import related activities within the UK!

Principle Duties

  • Responsible for the management and overseeing the Customs Operations team, processes, resources and activities, identify and implement continuous improvements and change initiatives as required.
  • Responsible for people management, recognitions, motivate and encourage team work, coach and develop individuals, promote and drive a culture of continuous improvement
  • Participate in personnel development at all levels through talent acquisition, compensation reviews, performance management, and providing opportunity for high performance, education, communication, expectation setting and self-actualization.
  • Responsible for ensuring teams adhere to company policies, comply with health and safety requirements, champion a compliance culture, positively reinforce and influence the required behaviors and company values.
  • Responsible for ensuring all import & export documentation and processes are maintained, whilst ensuring they are ready for both internal and external audit purposes as and when required.
  • Perform frequent post-entry reviews of import/export documentation to ensure they meet corporate and local regulatory requirements
  • To ensure that the Customs Operations function is up to date with all relevant Trade Compliance regulations as required, keep up to date with regulations and implement changes, seek guidance and advice from Trade Compliance function where necessary.  
  • To work proactively with the Customer Services function to ensure all export document requirements are understood and met prior to shipping
  • To work proactively with the Procurement function to ensuring all supplier documentation is accurate and available for customs clearance.
  • Budget holder and signatory for local Customs Brokerage budget as per Delegation of Authority (DoA).
  • Provide metrics on import/export volumes and values to regional Trade Compliance Official as per valid schedule
  • Meet regularly (at least quarterly) with Customs Brokers to review performance and update SOP if needed

Key Relationships:

  • External: Freight providers, Customs Brokers, Customs Authorities and other Government Agencies, Customers, Vendors
  • Internal:  Customer Service, Procurement, Inventory/Logistics, Master Data Manager (Product Managers/Engineering), Trade Compliance

Qualifications: Education, Experience, Skills, Abilities, License/Certification:

  • Substantial experience in Customs Operations and/or international trade/logistics, supported with qualification or have substantial quantifiable and demonstrable experience of a similar leadership role;
  • Demonstrates strong and effective people leadership and change management abilities;
  • Proficiency in Customs Operations and up-to-date knowledge of import and export trade compliance regulations;
  • Lean Six Sigma experience is preferred, must have experience in implementing process improvement;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with candor, good motivational techniques and a collaborative approach to delivering objectives. You know how to engage the team members within the team as well as how to engage with the key business stakeholders;
  • Excellent communication skills and cross boundary collaboration, building effective relationships both within the business as with our partners (e.g. customers brokers);
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to use initiative, judgement and make decisions;
  • Represent Xylem in professional manner, always acting in compliance and representation of Xylem Code of Conduct;
  • Computer literate.

Travel requirement:

  • Low travel required for role (< 10%) within Common Travel Area of UK & Ireland. Occasional travel within Europe might be requested.
  • This position is furthermore entirely remote/home based.
