The Role: Sensus, a Xylem brand, seeks to hire a Commodity Manager – Indirects. The Commodity Manager -  Indirects is a position in the Xylem Global Procurement organization. The major responsibility of this position is to manage key suppliers of indirect goods and services to achieve aggressive cost savings targets and to develop strategic sourcing plans for commodity / service. This position is also responsible for the supplier relationship program and accompanying tools in the management of strategic suppliers. Considerable interaction with both internal and external teams. The expectation will be to conduct market analysis and to use category expertise to establish category strategies, drive and conduct sourcing activities, lead supplier negotiations and supplier selection, and ongoing supplier performance management.

Key measurements of success include achievement of aggressive savings goals, development, maintenance and deployment of a successful sourcing strategy and managing supplier performance. In addition, a project plan and recurring reviews must be deployed to define and track all improvement opportunities and key action items to drive the success of the Sensus/supplier relationship. Additionally, the Commodity Manager - Indirect will closely align with internal stakeholders to proactively address and manage the major opportunities for categories and suppliers, including supplier selection alongside quality, manufacturing, sales, marketing, engineering, and more.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain, Engineering or related field. MBA preferred.
    • CPM or APICS certification a plus.
  • Minimum of 5 years combined Supplier Management, Global Sourcing, Commodity Management, Program/Project Management, Finance, and/or Manufacturing Operations experience in a manufacturing environment with a Fortune 500 company
  • Experience working with Indirect Commodity Procurement, such as; Marketing-related services, Professional Services, Travel Management services, IT related services, HR related services, Facilities Management and office services, Utilities, Consumables, MRO, Capital Goods, Fleet Management, etc.
  • Strong analytical skills and knowledge of market trends / pricing / commodities
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiating, communication, influencing, project management and leadership skills are required.
  • Must possess the personality to collaborate directly with a variety of individuals of all levels in various departments (external & internal) in a harmonious fashion, prioritizing as needed
  • Able to manage multiple projects successfully
  • Experience in purchasing diverse commodity groups, with the ability to quickly develop a working knowledge and become effective in new commodities
  • Experience developing and managing RFPs, including negotiating contract savings
  • Highly organized and able to prioritize and thrive in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed to complete the stated objectives

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Achieves Year-over-Year Productivity to meet/exceed Objectives via cost improvement/ working capital
  • Interact with internal customers to identify and implement cost reduction opportunities
  • Considerable interaction with both internal and external teams, especially GBS / GEP Team
  • Strong knowledge of sources of supply, markets, price and category trends with ability to accurately predict/anticipate marketplace events and develop action plans that anticipate/prevent implementation challenges
  • Provide supplier evaluation and selection, contract drafting and negotiation, relationship management, evaluating the country of origin, pricing, quality, and understanding capacity constraints
  • Develop strategy and analysis to support effective negotiation
  • Negotiate multi-year, yearly or quarterly agreements and SOWs
  • Create high-level, Strategic Sourcing MS Powerpoint presentations to be shared with Senior Management for their analysis and high-level business decisions
  • Interfaces with other departments and outside suppliers resolving any procurement related problems that may arise
  • Maintains a cost saving approach to purchasing by continual investigation of new sources of supply and new processes
  • Draft and review Subcontracts with legal team
  • Prime for subset of Sourcing projects to support team goals & objectives
  • Measure supplier performance and provide reports to operations management and back to suppliers to encourage continual improvement of processes and products/services
  • Project manages programs that deliver best-in-class cost and savings opportunities
  • Monitors pertinent markets and defines how changes will impact supply and pricing conditions
  • Maintains updated purchasing records ensuring accuracy of input and reliability, coordinating with Finance
  • Reports to Senior Management during Business Reviews, Commodity Strategy Reviews, Product Development Reviews and/or Operations reviews
  • Travels occasionally, either in a group or alone, to visit current or prospective suppliers domestically or internationally 

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain, Engineering or related field. MBA preferred.
    • PMP, CPM or APICS certification a plus
  • 5-8 years of Supply Management/Purchasing experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiating, communication, project management and leadership skills are required.
  • Strong analytical skills and knowledge of market trends / pricing / suppliers
  • Experience working with vendors in low-cost regions.
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers.
  • Ability to effectively analyze and utilize ERP reports and systems, preferably BPCS.
  • Ability to identify opportunities for savings and improvement via data found in various ERP and excel databases
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed to complete the stated objectives.
