Why UV for wastewater disinfection?
With correct UV light dose bacteria, viruses and other pathogenic microorganisms are safely inactivated within seconds. It requires small footprint as short channels are needed. Being a non-chemical disinfection method, it eliminates dangerous and costly storage of dangerous chemical disinfectants.
Advantage of UV over Chlorine
CHLORINATION |
UV |
Affects taste & odor, change in water chemistry |
No effect on taste & odor, no change in water chemistry |
Produces harmful disinfection by-products (DBPs) (carcinogenic) |
No formation of harmful DBP’s |
Requires specific ESH procedures as it is a hazardous and toxic chemical |
Low ESH requirements and concerns |
Corrosive |
Non corrosive |
Long contact time (min. 30 min) |
Short contact time (< 5 sec) reduces size of civil structures |
Large footprint, deep excavations |
Small footprint (~ 10% of chlorine), low excavations |
Low efficiency on protozoa |
High efficiency on protozoa |
Performance influenced by pH and temperature |
Performance independent of pH levels and temperature |
The iDuron is a modular open channel system based on Xylem’s advanced and efficient UV disinfection technology. It has broad capacity to inactivate bacteria, viruses and other pathogenic microorganisms. The iDuron is ideal for disinfection of mid-size to large wastewater treatment plants.
Superior ease of use
Central to the design is how easily and efficiently the iDuron UV system is maintained and serviced.
Easy and fast lamp replacement can be conducted while the modules remain in the channel.
Cleaning is simple and safe thanks to the iDuron's automatic, chemical-free electrical wiper system. The wiper rings consist of a unique material combination, proven effective even in waters with high fouling potential.
Only some maintenance tasks, such as wiper ring or sensor replacement, require lifting the frame with the UV module out of the channel with the help of a crane.
The iDuron's electrical components are located out of the water and are easily accessible. Ballast cards are separated from UV lamp modules for easy maintenance and operational stability. Cabinets are rated for either indoor or outdoor service, providing added flexibility in constructing or retrofitting the plant.
