Xylem honored by WateReuse Research Foundation

From Singapore to Stockholm, and all over California, Xylem’s water reuse technology is helping communities around the world build a secure water future. At the recent 19th Annual Water Reuse & Desalination Research Conference, the WateReuse Research Foundation honored Xylem for its commitment to water reuse research and developing innovative water reuse solutions.

The WateReuse Research Foundation is a leading nonprofit organization whose mission is to advance the science of water reuse, recycling and reclamation around the globe.

“WateReuse is proud to honor and recognize Xylem for its leadership and support,” said Melissa Meeker, Executive Director of the WateReuse Research Foundation. “The partnership between Xylem and the WateReuse Research Foundation is developing tools and resources to help build a secure water future.”

Population growth, urbanization, and persistent drought are straining water resources. Pollution and contamination compound these challenges, resulting in billions of dollars in economic losses. Serious action and innovative measures will be required to identify effective solutions to these challenges and develop sustainable water policies. Water reuse is a proven approach that can help meet growing water demands, while safeguarding existing water supplies.

Innovative water reuse technologies

“Xylem is committed to providing solutions that help address the world’s most challenging water issues,” said Keel Robinson, North America Marketing & Business Development Manager for Xylem. “The innovative use of technologies along with smart policy and strong political will are needed to realize these solutions. Water reuse is one step in building a pathway to a secure water future.”

Water reuse technology produces high quality water at a lower life-cycle cost than that of developing a new water supply option. Furthermore, it provides a resilient and drought-resistant water source with valuable economic and environmental co-benefits.

“We know that water reuse technologies exist today that safely and reliably reclaim wastewater for beneficial purposes,” Robinson said. “We look forward to continuing to partner with other innovators and customers to advance the implementation of water reuse and to help build a better understanding of its role in solving water scarcity.”

Xylem’s advanced treatment technologies are demonstrating that wastewater can be purified well beyond drinking water standards and reused safely and economically for both potable and non-potable purposes.

Here are a few of the places where Xylem’s technology is making a difference:

Silicon Valley and San Diego

Northern California’s newest water recycling facility, the Silicon Valley Advanced Water Purification Center (AWPC), is an eight-million-gallon per day facility that uses Xylem’s Wedeco UV systems. This technology provides the critical final disinfection step before the water is sent locally to support some of the world’s most innovative companies. In addition, the Santa Clara Valley Water District (SCVWD) is conducting two pilot studies with Xylem’s MiPro advanced oxidation process and Oxelia ozone-enhanced biologically active filtration to examine the potential for using reuse water to bolster potable water supplies.

In San Diego, Xylem’s Oxelia ozone-enhanced biologically active filtration technology is central to the Advanced Water Purification Facility at the North City Water Reclamation Center. This site is the focal point of the city’s demonstration project, which is a pilot study to optimize water reuse technologies to replace imported potable water sources.

Research in Stockholm

In Stockholm, Sweden, Xylem has established a water reuse research partnership with the Swedish Environmental Institute (IVL) and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), which is now overseeing a pilot plant and test bed for advanced process technologies, including Xylem’s biological treatment, filtration, disinfection and oxidation technologies that enable water reuse.

Sustainable in Singapore

The Changi Water Reclamation Plant in Singapore will install Xylem’s Wedeco UV systems as part of the NEWater process to sustainably and efficiently produce purified, reclaimed water. The Public Utility Board of Singapore (PUB) is testing and implementing cutting-edge water reuse technologies, and Xylem’s Wedeco UV technology meets the most stringent global water reuse disinfection regulations to ensure a safe water supply.
