Mimizan: reducing inflow and infiltration through centralized data collection and analysis

The Mimizan Federation of Municipalities is implementing the Xylem Vue platform to reduce inflow and infiltration by improving infrastructure monitoring.

Challenge

The Mimizan Federation of Municipalities provides water and wastewater services to six towns. Its public sewer system serves over 12,000 residents, in an area where the population can triple during the summer. The federation faces major challenges in managing inflow and infiltration (I&I), which reached over 715,000 m³ in 2024, representing nearly 42% of the inflow to the wastewater treatment plant. This situation causes hydraulic overloads, increases operating costs, and hinders infrastructure management.

Mimizan aimed to improve its infrastructure asset and network operations, as well as its investments, by implementing decision-support tools to comply with progressively stricter regulatory wastewater requirements and the European DERU II Directive.

Solution 

The federation is deploying the Xylem Vue platform to consolidate and leverage the data already available within its business tools. The solution brings together data from advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), GIS, CMMS, regulatory compliance monitoring, and meteorological data into a single environment.

Xylem Vue includes advanced analytical models that enable precise estimation of the various types of I&I and identification of affected network sectors. Operators thus benefit from a consolidated, contextualized view of sewer system operations, making it easier to pinpoint anomalies and assess their impact on service performance.

The platform also provides performance indicators and decision-support tools that enable operators to prioritize field initiatives, advise on renewal programs, and justify investments to stakeholders. This approach leverages existing data and maximizes the value of the digital infrastructure already in place, without overhauling the information system.

Results 

Thanks to this approach, Mimizan will gain greater insights into its infrastructure and its wastewater system operations. More precise I&I identification will target priority areas, optimize field initiatives, and improve the effectiveness of network investments.

The Xylem Vue platform will provide a comprehensive view of service performance, facilitating compliance with regulatory requirements, and strengthening the utility’s long-term ability to manage infrastructure.

Xylem Vue will help improve day-to-day operations, enhance the reliability of technical analyses, and accelerate decision-making by centralizing data from multiple applications. The project thus represents a significant step forward in the digital transformation of Mimizan’s wastewater management and in its commitment to continuously improving environmental and operational performance.
