Xylem’s Leopold brand is a leader in rapid gravity media filtration and clarification solutions for the water and wastewater industry. In potable drinking water treatment plants, the Clari-DAF system is used to clarify raw water to remove contaminants such as turbidity, algae, color, iron/manganese, organics, and taste and odor compounds. Leopold filtration products include rapid gravity media, membranes and reverse osmosis/ultrafine filtration. Leopold gravity media filtration is used in potable water treatment plants to remove particulate in the final filtration step. In public utility wastewater treatment plants, the Clari-VAC system is used in final clarifiers to remove sludge solids. For those areas where nitrogen and phosphorus nutrient removal is required, Xylem provides elimi-NITE systems which convert the filters to become biologically active so that the effluent meets the mandated nitrate and phosphorus levels. In desalination systems, Leopold Clari-DAF systems and Filterworx systems are provided to remove contaminants that will harm reverse osmosis membranes, so that salt can be removed from the seawater to make it potable.

Industries & Applications

Xylem offers a range of advanced wastewater and water solutions to help operators around the world achieve their required water effluent while delivering optimal performance, reliable operations and substantial energy savings no matter what industry or application. Working with customers, Xylem listens, learns, and adapts to local environments, ensuring the best possible design, customized to meet their specific needs. Below are some recommended industries and applications.

Municipal Wastewater

Municipal Wastewater

Harnessing the power that nature uses to cleanse the rivers and streams – air, microbes, gravity, light – the wastewater industry has revolutionized sanitation and brought health to their communities, rivers, streams, lakes and oceans. Through Xylem’s broad portfolio and expertise, customer needs are evaluated and the right solution provided with low life cycle costs. When the water leaves the plant, it is no longer wastewater, but a highly valuable resource.

Municipal Potable Water

Municipal Potable Water

Water utilities have to do more with less, and it’s not easy. They must conserve energy, make the most of every drop of water, use staff most efficiently to hold down costs, while meeting stricter requirements and improving quality. Xylem develops innovations to make processes and equipment more energy efficient, more reliable, more water efficient, and easier to operate.

Food & Beverage

Food & Beverage

With global population continuing to grow, feeding the world sustainably is a worldwide challenge. Water is at the center of this concern, as food production is the largest single consumer of water. Reducing the water footprint of food production is a central goal of the food and beverage industry. Xylem can assist in optimizing and managing every stage of a production facility’s water cycle. Customers utilize the complete water cycle solutions, such as energy efficient Flygt pumps to transport water throughout the facility, along with industry-leading Leopold filtration technologies, Sanitaire biological treatment and Wedeco disinfection and oxidation systems.

Mining operations demand a lot from their water processing systems. Whether water or slurry transport, treatment for potable and process use, or treatment of domestic and process wastewater, systems must be robust, reliable and easy to operate. As a global leader in water and wastewater systems, Xylem provides a complete line of transport, treatment, and instrumentation equipment and services to simplify water management. Rental options are available for most equipment and processes. Xylem engineers and Total Care specialists can provide expert support and aftermarket services.

From feedwater, through internal treatment to generate pharmaceutical grade water, to final discharge, water is critical to pharmaceutical manufacturing. Treatments must meet the standards of the relevant pharmacopeias for the intended use of the water, with different pharmaceutical grades requiring different treatments from purified water (PW) to highly purified water (HPW) to the highest purity of water for injection (WFI). With Xylem treatment processes, safe, sustainable water practices can be achieved throughout the manufacture and through final discharge.

About Leopold

About Leopold

Leopold has long been a worldwide leader in the water and wastewater treatment industry supplying both filtration and clarification systems. Leopold both designs and supplies systems for gravity filtration, clarification, denitrification, sludge collection and backwash water recovery. Leopold solutions are ideal for algae, contaminant, and nutrient removal, desalination pretreatment, reuse, SDI, and taste and odor reduction. Since its establishment in 1924, Leopold has pioneered and acquired a number of innovative technologies aimed at improving the quality of water while reducing costs. With over 8,000 installations, customers from around the world have come to rely on Xylem’s expertise and technological leadership in water and wastewater treatment.

Since 1924 Leopold has been designing and manufacturing rapid gravity media filtration and clarification solutions for treating water and wastewater. Leopold supplies potable drinking water treatment plants with media filtration, backwash water recovery, and desalination pretreatment solutions, while supplying wastewater treatment plants with tertiary filtration and denitrification solutions. They also supply both potable and wastewater treatment plants with dissolved air flotation (DAF) clarification and sludge collection solutions.

Leopold engineers are available to help analyze, evaluate and design all aspects of a complete filtration system, including evaluating influent water qualities, determining optimal loading rates and best design configuration, selecting the best media characteristics, and designing the backwash process. Xylem’s Leopold Filterworx performance filter system comes complete with flume, underdrains, integral media support, engineered media, backwash water troughs, and system controls. The result is a cost effective, efficient, high-performance system designed to meet customer requirements.

Xylem’s Leopold Clari-DAF is used to clarify raw water to remove contaminants such as turbidity, algae, color, iron, manganese, organics, and taste and odor compounds. It’s a highly-effective, proven technology for removing low-density particulates as well as Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Its performance is superior to conventional clarification in providing consistent water quality, producing consistently high sludge solids, and operating at high loading rates– results that can lower customer’s total cost of operation.

Leopold also offers sludge collection solutions with the Clari-VAC floating sludge collector and the CT2 submerged sludge collector. These systems are used in final clarifiers to remove the sludge solids. For those areas where nitrogen and phosphorus removal is required, Leopold provides elimi-NITE denitrification systems which convert the filters to become biologically active so that the effluent meets the mandated nitrate and phosphorus levels.
