Xylem's Smith-Blair 417 steel insulating coupling is used to connect and insulate pipes with different outside diameters. Installation is easy with no special pipe end preparation required, and the coupling allows for limited expansion and contraction. The coupling can be custom made to fit odd O.D.s or other unusual applications and has good deflection capabilities, allowing change in piping direction without the need of elbows, bends, etc.

Key Product Features

  • Joins and insulates plain end pipe of different diameters.
  • Meets applicable AWWA C219 Standards
  • Allows for limited expansion and contraction
  • Will dampen vibration to reduce pipe fatigue
  • Easy to install, no special pipe end preparation required
  • Available in a wide variety of pipe O.D. sizes and sleeve lengths

  • Has good deflection capabilities, allows change in piping direction without the need of elbows, bends, etc.

The Smith-Blair 417 steel insulating coupling is used to connect and insulate pipes with different outside diameters. This transition connection is designed for joining and insulating plain end pipe of different diameters, providing a reliable solution where dissimilar pipe sizes need to be connected. The coupling meets applicable AWWA C219 Standards and offers good deflection capabilities, allowing change in piping direction without the need of elbows, bends, or other fittings.

The 417 coupling is constructed with a sleeve made from ASTM A53, ASTM A513, or Carbon Steel having a minimum yield of 30,000 PSI. Followers are manufactured from Ductile Iron ASTM A536 or Steel AISI C 1020 Steel, while bolts and nuts are high strength, low alloy Steel with heavy semi-finished hexagon nuts. The gasket is Nitrile (Buna N) NSF® 61 compounded to produce superior storage and performance characteristics while resisting water, acids, alkalies, most (aliphatic) hydrocarbon fluids, and other chemicals. The coupling features a Flexi-Coat® Fusion Bonded Epoxy Finish and has a temperature range of -20°F to 180°F.

The 417 steel insulating transition coupling has a working pressure of up to 150 PSI and is designed for pipe applications including Steel, Cast & Ductile Iron. Available sizes range from 2 inches - 24 inches, with larger sizes available upon request. The coupling is available in a wide variety of pipe O.D. sizes and sleeve lengths and can be custom made to fit odd O.D.s or other unusual applications.

This product does not restrain pipe movement. Proper anchoring is required to prevent pipe pullout. Failure to anchor or improper anchoring can result in dangerous pipe content escape, property damage, serious injury, or death. Users must read the product installation instructions prior to installing this product.
