Overview

Today we have the opportunity to help accelerate progress – by working side by side to innovate and improve how the world conserves, optimizes and manages water to better protect our ecosystem and make water available to more people and communities around the world.

Water Affordability

Delivering water is not always an efficient process and a lot of water can be lost along the way. We help prevent lost water due to leaking infrastructure, pipeline failures, faulty meters and unauthorized use. We provide innovative solutions that save water, energy and cost.

Water Sustainability

Millions of people around the world lack access to water. We transport, treat, test and track water to help make it safe and readily available to communities. We enable water reuse to create sustainable water sources for areas facing water scarcity. We assess, monitor and fix clean water lost in distribution.

Diversity & Inclusion Trailblazers (VS1_02)

Diverse organizations and teams are not only proven to perform better, but build an environment where everyone, from any background can bring their authentic self to work is simply the right thing to do. Like with any challenge, leaders must dive in and analyze from a business perspective rather than sit on the sidelines hoping the challenge will sort itself out. Join AWWA’s Diversity & Inclusion 2021 Award Winners – Cathy Bailey, General Manager, Greater Cincinnati Water Works and Nancy Dunn, Xylem as they discuss how to lead with diversity. Together, we must be effective advocates for diversity; championing efforts to add more women, people of color, and other underrepresented groups into our organizations and the water sector as a whole.

- 03:15 PM

Your Journey to Utility Intelligence (VS1_20)

Utilities face new challenges every day. From population growth to pandemics – some obstacles are more predictable than others. It is no longer sufficient to focus on the delivery and billing of water. Utilities have a growing responsibility to improve management of water loss, water quality, and ensure the health and safety of the community they serve. A utility of the future is one that takes data from smart technology across the water network and uses the insights to proactively adjust and improve before problems can occur. Three utilities will share how they have gone from sufficient to resilient, addressing obstacles and learnings by implementing a smart utility network. Hear what you can do to become a utility of the future too.

Wednesday, June 16

Prolonging the Useful Life of Distribution Valves (VS3_20)

The best method of emergency management is to eliminate the need for it. Proactive O&M programs, such as valve maintenance programs, help utilities prioritize needs, plan rehab activities and avoid emergency situations. The importance of an O&M program for vertical assets is underscored in this session. Industry and utility professionals show how to use available tools, programs, and asset management approaches to maintain those crucial assets.

FAQs

FAQs

Aging Infrastructure

Many utilities are dealing with the challenges of aging water and sewer infrastructure. Despite their age, buried water and wastewater pipelines remain the most valuable assets a utility owns. In many cases, the value of buried pipelines represents two-thirds of the utilities’ total assets.

Learn how Xylem can assess the condition of aging infrastructure to determine replacement and also offer repair opportunities where needed:

System control

Up to 40% of valves are inoperable, unlocatable, or in the wrong position. Gain better network control by evaluating, rehabilitating, and repairing critical valves.

Pipeline condition assessment

Actionable pipeline condition data helps maximize the life of buried assets and can be used to prevent critical pipeline failures that threaten the environment and access to essential services.

Pipe repair solutions

With standard and custom options for clamps, couplings, adapters and saddles your aging infrastructure can be quickly and easily repaired extending the life of your water network.

Non-Revenue Water

The first step in addressing non-revenue water is ensuring accurate meter readings. From unmetered water and inaccurate billing to unauthorized use, apparent loss can cause revenue instability. Within your distribution system, water leaks, bursts and overflows also create costly problems as well.

For those reasons, reducing non-revenue water (NRW) and closing the gap between the volume of supplied water and the water usage billed is top of mind to increase and maintain efficiency and improve sustainability.

Utilities can deploy multiple solutions using the smart utility network to address their current and future needs, including:

Real Losses

Acoustic Monitoring

Detect flow by listening to the distribution system and analyzing the data to determine if a leak condition exists so you can quickly investigate and make repairs before major problems occur.

District Metering

Using new technology you can quickly and easily build District metering areas to more effectively monitor the water supplied and consumed allowing you to manage non- revenue water (real loss) leak detection.

Remote Connect/Disconnect Meter

An integrated three state valve allows you to remotely manage your water system to ensure quick response for leaks and in emergency response situations. Managing water loss has never been easier or safer.

Apparent Losses

Hidden Revenue Locator

Apparent water loss can account for up to 2% of a utility’s operating revenue. Reduce apparent loss and increase revenue by identifying individual meter inaccuracies and help prioritize meter replacement.
