The Role:
The Power Electronics Centre of Excellence (PECoE) seeks to hire a Senior Power Electronics Engineer. The primary focus of this Centre of Excellence is to design a range of custom motor drives (variable frequency) to surpass efficiency, usability and reliability requirements for a wide range of water applications. With one of the locations being with a world-class Cambridge-based consultancy, Sentec, we are supported by excellent facilities and superb access to its scientific experience and expertise whilst maintaining our constant focus on the design of motor drives.
As a Power Electronics Engineer, you shall be responsible for the power electronics and motor control for a range of variable frequency drives used within the Xylem portfolio. These products shall be based upon a re-usable platform which is customizable for specific applications and environments. Typical motor types used with these products shall be conventional asynchronous TEFC motors connected to water pumps, PMSM wetted rotor circulator
motors, and other PM or switched/synchronous reluctance motors for pumping applications. Typical power ranges shall be up to 22kW in the short-term, with higher power levels expected in the future.
As part of the role, occasional travel shall be expected from time-to-time to key Xylem R&D sites located throughout Europe, UK, US, and India. In order to be successful, you will need to demonstrate leadership in pursuit of technical solutions, have a hands-on approach to problem solving and be able to manage your work against time, budget and customer expectations.
Essential Duties/Principal Responsibilities:
- Design, test, and verification of electronics products and prototypes on single and three phase supplies at voltages up to 1000V.
- Schematic design/ PCB layout with Altium Designer.
- Analogue signal chain design and simulation using SPICE.
- Building and debugging hardware.
- Magnetics design, testing, and prototyping.
- Driving manufacturing efforts for reliability and quality.
- EMC/EMI testing and debugging.
- Conform designs to meet standards compliance.
- Interfacing with software engineers, physicists, and mechanical engineers.
- Present project/product development updated and product support to clients.
- Generating design, test, and verification documentation.
- Participation in Xylem Watermark volunteer activities
Minimum Qualifications: Education, Experience, Skills, Abilities, License/Certification:
- A Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Electrical, Electronic, or Power Engineering.
- 7+ years of Electronics design and/or 5+ years of Power Electronics/Drives design.
- Good knowledge of mixed-signal design.
- Magnetics design, specification, and testing.
- Good understanding of boost PFC converters, fly-back converters, half-bridge/full-bridge converters.
- Proficiency in schematic design/layout using a recognized package (eg. Altium Designer, OrCAD, PADS etc)
- Proficiency in the use of test equipment DMM, Oscilloscopes, Spectrum Analyzer, Impedance Analyzer, Hi-Pot tester, etc.
- High-level analytical ability, strong understanding of power engineering fundamentals and theory.
- Good understanding of half-bridge and fly-back converter topologies and general experience with SMPS.
- Good understanding of gate drive design, circuit protection (high power and voltage), analog filters, analog signal processing.
- Prior experience with mains-driven electronics.
- Hands-on experience with EMC/EMI testing and debugging.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 7+ years of Power Electronics/Drives design.
- Good understanding in motor control theory (synchronous and asynchronous)
- Good understanding of industrial communication protocols (RS485, ModBus, AS-i)
- IGBT design and specification, including associated electronics ie. Gate-drive, protection, fault-mechanisms etc.
