Volunteers Respond to Outbreak in China with In-Kind Equipment & Expertise

Through Xylem Watermark, Xylem’s Corporate Social Responsibility program, employees and stakeholders around the world leverage our technology and expertise to address water-related disasters and water challenges. Xylem employees and stakeholders in China have demonstrated their commitment to this mission by playing a critical role in the fight to prevent and control the ongoing novel coronavirus outbreak.

Since December 2019, the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, has spread rapidly, infecting over 43,000 people and killing over 1,000 people as of February 11th, 2020. The majority of those affected have been in China, with the origin and most severely affected region being the city of Wuhan, China.  Recognizing the threat that this public health emergency poses, Xylem Watermark deployed volunteer teams over the course of 3 days, from February 1st-3rd, to respond with expertise and water technology solutions at resource strained medical facilities.

To address the critical need for hospital beds and medical services in Wuhan, the Chinese government commissioned the expedited construction of an emergency medical facility, the Wuhan Huoshenshan Hospital. After Xylem employees in China learned that the hospital being constructed urgently needed wastewater pumps, the teams jumped into action, providing pro-bono skills-based volunteer expertise and equipment donations. On Day 1 of the response, a Xylem team installed three wastewater pumps at the Wuhan Huoshenshan Hospital, in order to meet the need for adequate transportation of wastewater produced by the newly constructed facility.

On Day 2, a team from Xylem partnered with a distributor, Fujian Zhanjin Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Co., Ltd, to deliver and install pumping equipment at the construction site of the Fuqing Hospital, in Fuzhou. Teams from both companies worked quickly and efficiently to provide a solution, donating and installing a Flygt TOP packaged wastewater pumping station.  On Day 3, Xylem employees also delivered four HVAC pumps at the No 6 Renmin Hospital in Shenyang.

Through their passion and dedication, Xylem China’s volunteer teams have demonstrated Xylem Watermark’s mission to provide education and access to safe water to ensure healthy lives, gender equality and resilient communities. The Xylem China teams continue to monitor the situation and are taking precautions to keep employees safe, while also working to address the pressing needs of affected communities.
