The Revolving Algal Biofilm (RAB™) system, by Gross-Wen Technologies, is a next-generation algae-based treatment technology that removes nutrients and organic pollutants from municipal and industrial wastewater. By harnessing the natural biological processes of algae, the RAB system provides a sustainable, low-energy, and space-efficient alternative to conventional wastewater treatment technologies. The RAB system is especially well-suited for integration into existing facilities where space constraints, simplicity and energy use are critical design considerations.

  • Reduced Biosolids – Algae growth replaces nitrification/denitrification biosolids production, decreasing or eliminating the frequency and cost of biosolids removal, processing and disposal.
  • Renewable Algae Biomass Production – Algae are used to produce controlled release fertilizer, soil amendment, bioplastics, or biofuels like sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), creating a nutrient circular economy
  • Minimal Chemical Demand – The RAB system requires minimal chemical input, significantly reducing a reoccurring expanse for the treatment facility
  • Low Energy Demand – Algae do not require aeration for nitrogen removal. Each RAB module is powered by a single motor, generating substantial energy savings compared to conventional wastewater treatment technologies, while lowering the facility’s energy costs.
