Xylem Inc. calls for increased use of drought-mitigation technologies

March 19, 2015

MIRA LOMA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mar. 19, 2015-- Xylem Inc. (NYSE:XYL), a leading global water technology company dedicated to solving the world’s most challenging water issues, today issued a statement regarding Governor Jerry Brown’s proposal for emergency drought relief. The Company also called on lawmakers to take steps needed to accelerate the use of drought-mitigation applications, such as water recycling and reuse technologies.

Xylem Inc. Statement

“The economic future of California is directly correlated to its water security. We applaud Governor Brown and the legislature for taking action as their proposals today demonstrate that by investing in California’s water security, we are investing in the long-term security of our communities and our broader economy. As we enter the fourth year of unprecedented drought conditions, it is clear that conservation efforts can help, but they will not be enough.

The technology and expertise to mitigate the impacts of drought already exist, and have been proven in successful applications around the world. Among them is water reuse technology, which reduces vulnerability to droughts and provides valuable environmental co-benefits. We must make it easier for industries and municipalities to reclaim wastewater for beneficial purposes, such as irrigation, industrial uses and environmental restoration. Streamline the permitting process, provide utilities with greater access to funding, and offer incentives to the public and private sectors to increase their water recycling efforts. These measures will help to accelerate water reuse implementation, providing an essential and sustainable addition to an overall water supply portfolio.

We must act today, implementing solutions that bring swift relief to crisis conditions while we continue to develop long-term, sustainable solutions that will secure water and fuel the California economy for generations to come.”
